Holding A Child Back

Many parents have called us in the
last two weeks with a simple
question, "Should I hold my child
back?

The simple answer is, "It depends".

We tend to recommend against
holding a child back in
Kindergartern, because another
year is unlikely to help

In 1st or subsequent grades we
recommend you look at:
- Is your child one of the youngest
in their class -- especially for
children with learning challenges
and attention issues, it may work
to hold them back --
we recommend telling them in as
positive a way as possible

- With the pressure
to pass standardized tests,
parents have to understand that
the emotional cost of moving a
child ahead who is already
behind can be high

An excellent option is to take
action over the summer to
get the help your child needs.

Then reassess.

This is by far the best option,
because your child will be
better prepared for both
the following year and for
life
